Self-tapes have become a standard part of the casting process, but creating a strong audition at home involves more than putting a phone on a tripod and pressing record.
Framing, eyeline, lighting, sound, reader placement and your recording environment can all affect how easily casting can focus on the most important part of the audition: your performance.
This hands-on workshop from Tame Rabbit, with casting insight from Casting Director Roni Hummel, will take actors through the self-tape process from setup through submission.
The goal isn't to make your audition look like a movie.
The goal is to make it easy for casting to see, hear and evaluate you.
What You'll Learn
Framing & Camera Placement
Learn proper framing, camera height and distance, and how to avoid common framing mistakes that distract from the performance.
Eyeline & Reader Placement
See how reader position affects eyeline and performance, and learn how to maintain connection without looking directly into the camera.
Lighting
Learn how to create clean, flattering lighting that keeps the focus on you without requiring an elaborate production setup.
Sound
Understand room sound, microphone choices and placement, and the audio problems that can hurt an otherwise strong audition.
Your Self-Tape Space
Choose a background, control distractions and build a simple self-tape setup you can reproduce consistently at home.
Slates & Submission
We'll discuss slates, recording choices, basic editing, file preparation and getting the finished audition ready to submit.
Hands-On Demonstration
We won't just talk about self-tapes. We'll build and demonstrate a self-tape setup in the room using an actor on camera and an off-camera reader.
You'll see how changes in camera position, framing, eyeline, reader placement, lighting, sound and performance for the lens affect the finished audition.
You'll see what works, what doesn't — and why.
Featuring Casting Director Roni Hummel
Actors can spend so much time worrying about equipment and technical details that they lose sight of the person who ultimately needs to watch the audition.
Casting Director Roni Hummel joins Tame Rabbit to bring the casting perspective into the room and help actors better understand what casting is actually evaluating when a self-tape arrives.
What You Should Leave With
✓ A clearer understanding of what casting evaluates
✓ Better control of framing, eyeline and reader placement
✓ A practical approach to lighting and sound
✓ A workflow for testing and correcting your setup
✓ A clearer process for recording, editing and submitting
✓ More confidence when your next self-tape request arrives
Who Is This Workshop For?
This workshop is designed for actors who want to become more comfortable and consistent with the self-tape audition process.
Whether you're relatively new to self-tapes or already submitting regularly, the focus is on creating a simple, repeatable process that allows you to spend less energy worrying about the technical setup and more energy on your performance.
What This Workshop Is — and Isn't
This is a self-tape process workshop, not a demo reel shoot.
The workshop focuses on teaching you how to create your own professional self-tape auditions. Participants will not be individually filming monologues or receiving professionally produced finished footage as part of this workshop.
Actors interested in professionally recorded performance material can also watch for Tame Rabbit's Acting for the Lens and Advanced Acting for the Lens workshops.
